Nguyễn Văn Thiệu, 1923-2001

Thiệu helped to put down the 1960 coup attempt against Ngô Đình Diệm, but later assisted the November 1963 coup that resulted in Diệm’s capture and execution. Thiệu was the nominal head of state in a military-led regime from 1965-1967, and was elected in nationwide elections in 1967. He ran South Vietnam until immediately before the fall of the country. He lived the remainder of his life in the United States and died in 2001.
